Week of 23rd Sep - What to look out for on TV?

After almost one year of international airing, you can catch ‘The Big Bang theory-Season 6’ on Indian Television on Zee Café. All the hard core fans have probably seen this season owing to kickass torrents/ piratebay or a friend with a speedy broadband and a hard disk. But watching live telecast on TV is differently entertaining, the syncing of bathroom breaks with the commercial breaks, bitching about the lame TVCs and gasping at the heart warming ones and the entire rush of watching a show putting everything else at a standstill. Coming back to the season 6 of our favorite geeky TV series which did not really start with a bang, I was all game for the entry of Amy in season 4 who was a girl and a friend of the ingenious Sheldon Cooper with subtle angles of romance. But season 6 gives the limelight to their relationship and it is a tad disappointing seeing Sheldon as a boyfriend which naturally subdues his arrogance and outlandishness. The relationship of Penny and Leonard that everyone secretly prays for does not explore any new grounds. The jokes about Howard’s obsession with his space adventure do not just annoy the characters but also the audience. All in all this season does not heighten the series but seems to be setting a good ground for season 7 which is soon to see its international release.

Mythological shows seem to be a raging trend on Hindi Television. I am not surprised about the fact that we are finally a little tired of the unreal, atypical family dramas. It was hard to miss the highly enigmatic trailers of the Star Plus’s new prime time show, Mahabharata. They raised the level of excitement with the newer perspectives by showing Shakuni not as a sadist but a brother vengeful for his sister’s predicament and Draupadi as a strong character whose fury marks this epic tale. It is big on graphics, costumes are rightly opulent and dialogues are not weighed down by Sanskrit but still have a magnificent appeal. It is a story that everyone deserves to know and this attempt is highly appreciated. It is compared to BR Chopra’s telling which glued the Indians to TV for quite a few Sundays but during this 3D generation, the audience deserves a newer touch and different perspectives. It is just the beginning so let us see how it sustains our curiosity. To follow the show, tune into Star Plus at 8:30 PM.

Moving onto the world of Reality TV, last week inaugurated Big Boss Season7 featuring Salman Khan as the host for the fourth consecutive time. This year it works on the theme of Heaven and Hell where participants will be separated in these two different houses. It seems to be a good mix of caste with soap stars for the homely appeal, Gauhar Khan and Hazel Keech for the glamour, VJ Andy for quirky bits among the others. Unlike the last time, this season will see a guest entry every season and rumor has it that a dog will also soon enter as a contestant. Now we just have to sit and watch as the drama spirals in the two houses of Big Boss at 9 PM on Colors.

If you are not so big on TV Shows, we also have a few picks for Hollywood Movies showing this week.

IN BRUGES (24th September, Tuesday @ 8 PM on HBO Hitz): Guilt-stricken after a job gone wrong, hitman Ray and his partner await orders from their ruthless boss in Bruges, Belgium, the last place in the world Ray wants to be.

Rated 7.9 on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes says, “Featuring witty dialogue and deft performances, In Bruges is an effective mix of dark comedy and crime thriller elements.”

PROMETHEUS (24th Sep, Tuesday @ 4PM on Star Movies): A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Rated 7.1 on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes says, “Ridley Scott's ambitious quasi-prequel to Alien may not answer all of its big questions, but it's redeemed by its haunting visual grandeur and compelling performances -- particularly Michael Fassbender as a fastidious android.”

HUNGER GAMES (28th Sep, Saturday @ 8PM on HBO Hits): Katniss Everdeen voluntarily takes her younger sister's place in the Hunger Games, a televised fight to the death in which two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are chosen at random to compete.

Rated 7.2 on IMDb and Rotten tomatoes says,” Thrilling and superbly acted, The Hunger Games captures the dramatic violence, raw emotion, and ambitious scope of its source novel.”
