Kabaddi World Cup 2016 attracts more than just Kabaddi fans across India

After nine years of no play, the Kabaddi World Cup is back this year, and for the first time - broadcast LIVE on Indian Television. Witnessing the Indian Kabaddi Team’s third consecutive win in the World Cup, the tournament garnered a massive viewership of 74 million unique TV viewers in India.

56.5% of the Kabaddi World Cup viewers had previously watched the Pro Kabaddi League earlier this year. Having successfully roped in Kabaddi fans, did the Kabaddi World Cup also acquire what brand advertisers call a ‘Sport Audience’ segment in India?

200 Mn viewers watch India Vs NZ series: ODIs garner IPL level viewership

New Zealand’s Cricket tour of India coincided perfectly with the Diwali festivities: the Test matches followed by India’s glaring victory at the ODIs attracted a massive viewership of 200 million unique TV viewers in India. In a show of high viewership loyalty, 69% of viewers watched both the Test series and ODIs.

The ODI game format garnered 64% higher viewership than the Test matches, even rivalling the viewership numbers of the world’s largest viewed cricket league - the IPL.

Beyond Football: 31.6 Mn viewers watch the opening of Hero ISL

What became the world’s fourth biggest football league with its very first game season in 2014, the Indian Super league (ISL) is back this year with an opening day that received 31.6 million TV viewers in India. This number is close competition to the most recent season of Pro Kabaddi League which saw an opening of 34.4 million viewers.

Sharing only 2.8% of viewers with the UEFA Euro football tournament this year. Has the Indian Super league successfully gone beyond just football fans in India?

India vs West Indies T20 sees 121 Mn viewers: cricket audiences are loyal to the game in any format

The India vs West Indies T20 matches saw 121 million viewers tuned in to watch the live telecasts on 27th and 29th August - almost as massive as the IPL viewership this year. The preceding test matches in the same series garnered a big viewership of 70 million viewers, despite popular knowledge that test cricket has taken a back seat with the game’s gradual evolution to more fast-paced formats. Interestingly, a large portion of these viewers have also watched previous cricket tournaments. Do these viewers make up an audience loyal to cricket, regardless of the format in which the game is played?
